Grand Traverse Canvas Works is a family owned business started in 1980 by Mary Wodzien. Over the last 40 years our staff and areas of expertise have grown as we serve Northern Michigan’s expanding outdoor needs. We have worked on everything from military contracts to cherry shaker tarps and everything in between.
Who we are:
Mary Wodzien, began her canvas career in the Detroit area working at her step-father’s canvas shop. Unlike many who start with home sewing her early experience was on heavy duty tarps and equipment. After moving to Traverse City in the late 1970s Mary supervised a local garment factory and eventually formed her own canvas shop in an outdoor workspace attached to her home. From there her skills and the business grew to the present. She is an invaluable resource with decades of experience sewing, designing, and managing.
Larry Wodzien (MFC), joined Grand Traverse Canvas shortly after its founding in 1980. His constant pursuit of perfection and maintaining high standards has shaped Grand Traverse Canvas into a custom shop that is always striving to improve. He is our resident IFAI Master Fabric Craftsman and has been a resource for the industry regionally having hosted and presented at workshops and conferences.
Broc Wodzien, Over the past 30+ years, he survived stroller falls off of patterning tables, sliced fingers on cut tubing, and spent many summers helping install covers out at the various marinas in Northern Michigan. Broc reentered the profession in 2012 and has helped systematize the shops 40 years of history, know-how, and excellence as they continue to grow and serve the expanding needs of the area.
